Bring on Autumn!

I think surfers may just be the only people at the beach to be wishing for the start of Autumn.

Autumn generally brings and end to the summer flat spells and says hello to another few months of big clean swells breaking onto groomed summer banks (Pic: Fistral, last Autumn doing its thing).

If Sept/Oct last year was anything to go by.......it could be a good'un! I know at least 4 members of Gul here in Plymouth have new boards waiting for 'that day' just try and keep us out of the water! yeeeeow!

Teahupoo Contest On Now!!!...or is it

We here at Gul have been awaiting the 'WCT Pro Teahupoo' in Tahiti!! As our sweep stake of the top 44 gets more competitive so I am sure does the actual competition!

The comp started on the 23rd but they hve experienced 2 lay days, waiting for a BIG classic Teahupoo swell. Be sure to catch it via webcast, they give the shout to start or not at 6:30pm our time!

Oh Yea..........

And did we mention Round 1 heat #10 Kelly Slater vs Andy Irons!!!! Does it get any better out there?!

And the wave:

Teahupoo breaks in the same spot no matter how big it gets. It's a heavy short lefthander and gives you the rush of facing death and surviving. It's probably best surfed at around six to eight feet. Any bigger than that and it really lives up to its title as the heaviest wave in the world.
The easiest entry into a Teahupoo barrel is going deep. It lets you in , well sometimes, but if you miss you are kissing coral.

Our lil 'Tok Surf Grom' Neil has been talking loud in store this morning, and he is predicting good things for the waves on Sunday.

You heard it here first....BUT....dont come looking for him if it is ruuubbbbish! You'd struggle to find him anywhere but the beach even if it is 0.5ft. But if it is good you owe him a jaeger or a pint because he has been 'praying for surf!'

Boardmasters Again!!!!!

That time of year again! Boardmasters weekend in Newquay! All the guys on good form and are surfing hard, Mitch Coleburn (above)spotted in the water this week getting in some practice sessions! And Tom Lowe (right) is representing at the Padang Indo Comp!

Coldwater Classic South Africa!!!!!!

The most Northern, the most southern, the wildest and the coldest group of competitions on the WQS circuit!

64 rounds taking place at Outer Kom, this wave is situated at Kommetjie, a suburb in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Cape Town. The wave its self is a solid reef break and with smaller beachies more inshore, should provide some good wave set ups!

Big shout out to the Kom Scom Massive! Respect to all the cold water surfers out there!

Retro Neil's Excitment

Neil got very excited at Head Office when he saw boards and suits from his era and Gul's early days in the 60's!!!!!

As I am in the family way I sadly couldn't take part in the Flo riding antics, instead I took some pretty pictures.

After awhile I got bored of making everyone look good and decided to get some more amusing shots, these were of course only for my own amusement but sadly somehow a villainous rouge got his hands on one and outed the lovely Tee.

The 4th Event on the ASP has started! Hosted at Jeffery's Bay, South Africa!

Event started today with Kelly Slater in heat 8 as the stand out in the 4-5ft perfect barrelling point waves, currently ranked no.1 out of the top 44 surfers in the event.

The guys in the shop have picked their dream team for the event. Dan (Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds), Neil (Taj Burrow and Jadson Andre), Phil (Mick Fanning and Adriano De Souza), Dunc (Slater and Bobby Martinez).

Looking good fun for Sunday! Chest/Head high waves 4-8mph wind (ONshore but only light)good sunny summer session on the north coast somewhere. There will be a few Gullians (Gul Staff) in the water i'm sure!

Oh and not to mention a little football match afterwards i think.

How About Alaia??????

Surfing in the ancient style on a finless wood board has been overlooked for many years now.

The popularity of these boards is growing fast and many well known surfers ride them often including David Rastovich, Tom Carroll, Mike Stewart, Dan Malloy, Derek Hynd, Thomas Campbell and Dane and Belinda Peterson.

How does a fin-less plank work you ask?????? Well.....The thin, flat rockered board moves across the wave very quickly. The hard edge of the rail bites into the wave like a long fin and the gentle curves on the bottom hold the board into the face of the wave. The board is made as light as possible so it accelerates quickly and the wood is sealed with oil which is slippery in the water. This makes the board move faster through the water like a fish.

And guys you can make your own with a little know how for about £50 if you have tools, hottest thing for sliding on this summer, come in and discuss with Phil/Dan or our shaper man Duncan or take a look at our new stylish summer boards with retro sprays (due in July)

Even on a beautiful sunny day with the waves crashing around you, the beach at Gaza city is not the most idyllic.
A few teenagers kick a football among the litter.
Behind them are the remains of some of the bombed-out buildings from last year's conflict with Israel that have still not been cleared.
It's therefore a somewhat surreal sight to see young men, clad in wetsuits, boards tucked under their arms, splashing into the water. These are the surfers of Gaza.
